Frequently asked questions

Questions we are often asked.

Thirteen of the most common questions we receive, with plain-English answers. If your question is not here, write to the trustees — we read every letter ourselves.

Who is eligible to receive a grant?

Widows and widowers, one-parent families, families with a member experiencing a long-term illness, single people of state-pensionable age living alone, and such other families resident in the former Parish of Llanwrthwl as the trustees believe would gain from extra financial help. The wording is from our trust deed.

What is the ‘former Parish of Llanwrthwl’?

The historic ecclesiastical parish of Llanwrthwl in Powys (formerly Brecknockshire), running from the seven-arched stone bridge at the south to the heads of the Claerwen and Elan in the north — about twelve thousand acres of mid-Wales upland and lowland. If you live just over the parish line in Rhayader or Newbridge-on-Wye, we will help point you to a fund that can help.

How do I apply for help?

Write a short letter to the chair, c/o Llanwrthwl Village Hall, Llanwrthwl, Llandrindod Wells, Powys, LD1 6NU. A phone call or a quiet word with any trustee at the village hall is also fine. There is no application form.

Do I need to provide bank statements?

No. We use the trust deed’s discretion. We do not means-test in any formal sense.

How quickly will I hear back?

The chair will phone or visit within five working days for ordinary requests. Urgent funeral costs are handled the same week. The January Distribution is decided on the second Thursday of January.

How much can the charity give?

Most grants are between £40 and £150. The chair and one other trustee can act between meetings up to £100; anything larger waits for the next quarterly meeting.

Is my application confidential?

Yes. We do not publish names. We do not put names on receipts. Records are kept on paper in a locked box at the chair’s house and destroyed after seven years (the period required for HMRC Gift Aid).

Can I nominate a neighbour?

Yes. Write to the chair in confidence. We will not name you as the nominator when we make contact with the household.

How can I donate?

By cheque made out to THE CHARITIES OF EDWARD AP EVAN AND OTHERS, by BACS or standing order (email [email protected] for bank details), or by one-off online gift via our donate page.

Can I leave the charity a gift in my will?

Yes, as Edward ab Evan did in 1648. Our registered name is THE CHARITIES OF EDWARD AP EVAN AND OTHERS, charity number 220004, registered office c/o Llanwrthwl Village Hall, LD1 6NU. Please speak with your solicitor.

Are you a Christian charity?

Our founder was a parishioner of the established church, but the trust is not denominational and does not fund religious instruction or activity. We help neighbours regardless of faith.

Who are the trustees?

Seven neighbours, all resident within the former Parish of Llanwrthwl. Robert Lewis chairs. The seven are Robert Lewis, Sharon Morris, Ben Gaskell, Alan Austin, Paul Booth, Gareth Thomas and Jennifer Thomas. Their names and appointment dates are also on the Charity Commission’s public Register of Charities under number 220004.

How are you funded?

The bulk of our small income comes from the historic farm bequest (Cae’r Llan farm, let to a working tenant). The rest is from small donations from parishioners and friends of the parish.
